Earn Money By Participating in University Studies

When I first heard of doing this, I thought of drug trials, and that did not appeal.  Fortunately, there are more than trials available to those interested in bringing in some extra cash by being subjects or participants in research studies.

One of my daughters is earning a little over 300 dollars to eat about half a cup of almonds every morning (provided by the company), and get her blood drawn a few times.  Almonds happen to be her favorite of all nuts. In fact, she's passionately fond of them.  There's a similar study (and pay scale) involving eating peanuts, and a couple more where the participants eat beans.  Some studies are just surveys you fill out for the psychology department. These pay less, obviously.

I even know of one that paid 200 dollars, required a time commitment of a weekly visit over 14 weeks, and 'required' participants to eat chocolate each day!

How to find these jobs- if you live near a university or college, call and ask.  Use Google.  Often local money saving blogs will have information on these opportunities.  Check Craig's List.

Do check the time commitments- some studies require you to spend an entire day at the University getting several blood draws. Some require early appointments that may not be a good match.  But it's worth look into.

We live near a university and have done this quite a few times over the years. Around here it’s mainly grad students in the psychology department who have to collect participants for their studies, but I’ve seen people-wanted ads for other areas such as optometry.

Often they’re looking for families or couples, if they’re studying communication styles, child development, etc. My husband and I have occasionally signed up for one of the one-shot couple studies. We think of it as a cheap date night. (Or, actually, a get-paid-to date night.)

A similar occasional money-helper for us has been “focus groups.” There’s a company near here that regularly collects up people for consumer studies–you watch advertisements, talk about why you like or dislike a product, that sort of thing. Once you’re on the general list, they call when there’s a particular group needed to see if you qualify–do you eat at this or that fast-food restaurant, what’s your regular brand of XX, do you have preschoolers who watch TV, and so on. (Sometiems they’re looking for people who DO eat or use whatever, sometimes they’re NOT–so it’s no good just saying yes to everything in hopes that you get picked.)

As you said, you can find out about opportunities like this through classified ads (in print or online), or sometimes on bulletin boards if there’s a university nearby. Grad students don’t have huge advertising budgets. ;-)

While in college my son sold his blood plasma for extra spending money. We paid his ‘regular’ expenses but for the fun things he wanted to do we wanted him to get a part time job. He did get a job, it was in the medical field and he learned he could make $400.00 a month by selling his blood. He never had a big problem do it.

I have often done psychology studies at university. Usually they pay 10-20$,are 15min and involve simple things, like being timed to complete flash cards, or using your non dominant hand to fill out a form.

My brother in law payed for multiple months of groceries by being paid to sit (and study) in a pig barn for 2 hours a week, he had to check his lung capacity before and after.

Where do you find these studies? I live in SF and there are a number of universities here, but after looking on craigslist I didn’t find ones I fit into, any help is appreciated!

Ian, try calling your University and asking. Go to the psychology building and see if they have a bulletin board (that’s how my daughter found out about one of them).

Use google and search for research studies at your local Uni. You won’t always find studies that work for you, and this is probably a bad time of year in the states, as it’s the end of the school year.

Have you considered selling your plasma? That might be something to help out between now and when school starts up again in the fall.
