Frugal New Year’s Resolutions

Posted by: DeputyHeadmistress on Friday, December 30th, 2011

According to my vague internet research, get out of debt is in the top ten New Year's Resolutions each year.   Save more money would have to be another. Reduce consumption would be related. Simplify your life would be another.  Improve your use of time would be another.

Here are some suggested resolutions that might help with any of those goals.

Simplify your life and the budget by picking one low-budget, simple meal and fixing it one night each week for at least four weeks. My suggestion is 'savory vegetable pie,' which kind of like a cross between a pot pie and biscuits and gravy.  Frugal Tip: make your own biscuit mix.

Save more money: Pick one thing to cut back on, just for one month.  It could be your heat, your use of lights, using the dryer or dishwasher, unplugging the laptop for an extra hour or two, turning off the stereo, or being more careful to keep the freezer running efficiently.  Here are some winterizing tips (I realize some of you live in the southern hemisphere, so you'd rather have tips on keeping cool).

Simplify while improving your use of time: Download the free e-book (you don't need an e-reader, you can download the program for free at Amazon) How to Live on 24 Hours a Day, read it and apply the principles.

Learning new skills:
Try Spanish
Or Sign Language (ASL here. If you live outside the US, you should look for your own country's sign language)

Find free ways to have fun.

Are you making any frugal New Year's REsolutions this year? How do you plan to keep them?

My goal is to read 25% of the entire star wars book series, but I will only buy them from thrift stores or check them out from the library.

I just popped in to say. I downloaded the book yesterday and read it last night.
I actually downloaded the Kindle for Window pc… Anyway. I read it. I am amazed at the idea of *concentration*

I had actually bought into the idea of being an adult with A.D.D. Now, I don’t mean to say people don’t have it. But I do sometimes wonder if we’ve just lost the willingness to concentrate.

I’ve been *concentrating on this book all day today as I’ve gone about my day…Living in the 24 hrs. I’ve been given.

I also wanted to say; this book doesn’t mention anything that I noticed about spiritual matters; in fact I found it to be full of secular humanism. HOWEVER~ there is a fundamental truth underlying the book. That is do not worry about tomorrow;for tomorrow will worry about itself and…whatever you do; do it heartily (as unto the LORD) This book hasn’t said these things in so many words– I found the principles there just the same.

Thanks for posting the link!
Have a happy and wonderful New Year…with 8760 hrs to LIVE IT! 8784 counting Leap year day!

I think you have it just right, my Frugal New Year’s Resolution is to eat more frugal home cooked meals.

I like the idea of one inexpensive meal a week. I find myself eating out way too much and just having a couple nights a week where I cook for myself would save me a lot of money down the line.
