My Wonder Frugal Product

Returning to the scene of my fiasco, I stared at my carpet with amazement. No vestige of the black markings was left on the rug. My bottle of hydrogen peroxide had done wonders again!

Diligently vacuuming a few days ago, I noticed the cleaner was doing a very poor job. My suspicions were confirmed when I discovered the fan belt had broken. I turned my machine over, not thinking to put a sheet under the vacuum or investigate the problem on a washable floor surface. I then proceeded to dump a large amount of black sooty material all over the carpet. Said fan belt had deteriorated in spots and left me an incredible mess. The beige carpet now had a large speckled black spot.

Remembering my bottle of hydrogen peroxide kept under the sink with a spray atomizer instead of a cap, I hoped my wonder frugal product would save the day again. Discouragement soon set in, however, as it appeared I was only making the problem worse.

The stain seemed to grow as I did my usual save-the-carpet routine of spraying the fibers and making sure the area was saturated by ruffling it with my fingers. Knowing how often this process had spared my carpet a stain, I persisted with my spraying. Now, several days later, I realized my persistence had paid off. The stain had disappeared!

Hydrogen peroxide is a must-have frugal product. My rugs take quite a beating. The path to my house has a wild persimmon tree by the side that seasonally sheds large blue-black berries. Invariably these berries find their way onto my rug via the bottom of a shoe. Our black clay soil makes a concrete-like mud that often appears on this carpet as well. Hydrogen peroxide again comes to the rescue.

I do caution if using this product to test carefully in a hidden area. I would not recommend hydrogen peroxide for dark or patterned carpets. A bleaching effect takes place that could cause problems. I am no scientist and only take responsibility for my own home experiments!

Carpet cleaning is just one of the many uses of hydrogen peroxide in the home. We once owned a dog, called a Bouvier Des Flandres (Husband’s favorite dog), bred to pull milk carts in Holland. These are large dogs! As this dog had heat cycles that lasted for three weeks, I know for a fact that hydrogen peroxide is a great blood stain remover!

As hydrogen peroxide has some antibacterial properties, I use it with a mixture of vinegar and water, to sanitize my kitchen counters. I have also used this product to get stains out of clothes. (Again, be careful to try first on a hidden area.) As one who frequently forgets to put on an apron, my spray bottle is used again and again to spray my clothes (while they are still on me), throughout the cooking process.

I use 3% hydrogen peroxide and caution those with sensitive skin to use rubber gloves. I do hope this information may be a blessing to someone else with carpet woes.

Are there any other recommendations for wonder frugal products?

I’ve used peroxide a number of times to save clothes that got blood on them, but be sure to be patient and let them soak a couple hours if needed. Also, this won’t work if you wash the clothes first–use it on fresh blood.

Peroxide also works as a mouth rinse, diluted with half water and helps heal mouth sores quickly.
