An Ordinary Day of Frugal Delights
Munching on left-over cheese steaks, Youngest Son and I were sitting on our narrow side porch reveling in a beautiful day. Enjoying the memories of the evening before when all our children had joined us to celebrate Husband’s birthday, my thoughts were many. Husband’s choice of cheese steaks, Jewish pickles and potato chips for his birthday meal was most appreciated by our Texas transplanted hearts from the East Coast and evoked reminiscing about days gone by. (It is not often that pickles are the only “green” food item on our table!)
Husband had passed on lunch and was off to purchase a new lawn mower. As one who finds little delight in “new” purchases, I was practicing being grateful that money had been found in our budget. Our floor improvement cache would need to wait a bit longer, but I was pleased to know the lawnmower costs could now be covered.
All in all, I was enjoying this ordinary day of frugal delights! I had watched a video to start the day and learned another use for my egg shells beyond the compost pile. Boiling the shells in water and then freezing the boiled water to make super calcium ice cubes for my smoothies appealed to my frugal healthy spirit. Adding orange peels from breakfast to the container in the refrigerator to later use for homemade orange oil also brought a feeling of frugal satisfaction. The lemon waiting to be used in the sun tea brewing on our back deck would increase my stash of peals in the container. Of course I would first use the squeezed out lemon, cut side down, to clean my stained fiberglass kitchen sink.
Placing a chicken carcass from the freezer in the crockpot with garlic cloves, onion and celery tops also added to my delight. Chicken soup and broth would soon be my reward. The smell wafting from the “pot” throughout the day was in itself worth the few minutes of work.
Traveling around my yard collecting small rocks to create weed free zones made my frugal heart happy. I often pause and thank the Lord for His bounty and my low cost landscaping. These rocks have saved money and time!
Now taking a break from this glorious day of low humidity and breeze, I was ever so grateful! Living in South Texas makes days like this seem like pure gold. How nice not to end my morning of yard work with face flushed and body depleted by sun and hot air.
Thinking a head to my dinner plans, I realize a frugal meal of leftovers will make dinner a snap. As food prices rise, I am looking for every creative avenue to keep my budget intact. Convincing myself this workout of budget and resourcefulness is good for me, I am grateful for this ordinary frugal day of delight.
