He’s A Frugal Kind of Guy
Listening to New-Son-To-Be telling me about a deal he snagged, I knew Daughter had found a frugal kind of guy. Or should I say, he actually found her. Giving away a much loved daughter to be soon married, is an awesome proposition. Always desiring the best for those we love, and knowing all that comes with the words, “I do,” Husband and I take this time of life seriously.
We are blessed with New-Son-To-Be. Not only does this young man have a heart that seeks to serve the Lord and honor his parents, but he has also shown great deference to Husband and me. Oh, and did I mention that he adores Daughter?
One of the many blessings Husband and I see in this young man, is his desire to also be a careful steward of his finances. By living at home before marriage and following the counsel of his dad, New-Son-To-Be has made saving his money and living with a frugal bent, a priority.
What a joy for parents to see a couple making such wise and careful decisions. Investing in a couch and bed, New-Son-To-Be and Daughter will be completing the furnishing of their apartment via Craig’s List. It has been fun watching them comb ads for sales and checking out second hand appliance shops. We all rejoice when they score!
Because of being willing to live a self-disciplined financial life, New-Son-To-Be can also have some frugal flair. He knows when to splurge! Daughter was whisked away and greatly surprised by a two hour flight by small plane to have the “will you marry me” question asked on a 45 foot sailboat! Imagine what a story they had to tell us at the end of this day!
In these challenging economic times, it gives comfort to Husband and me to know New-Son-To-Be and Daughter have a financial plan and are ready to make wise financial decisions. We are grateful to see this next generation with a heart to live debt free. Daughter has learned a great deal by watching and experiencing our financial challenges and victories.
So it is on my heart to share that it is important to teach your children well. Do not be ashamed of your frugal life. Include your children in the process. Demonstrate contentment without minimizing the sacrifice. It is good for our children to understand the cost, as well as taste the benefits of living the frugal life.
For those who do not yet see light at the end of the tunnel and for those really feeling the pain of challenging circumstances, your tough times can be a training ground for a better future for your children. Be mindful to share the lessons now and some day, Lord willing, you too will share in the blessings of seeing your children choose the frugal life. May your daughter marry a frugal kind of guy.
