Frugal Generosity

Listening to my friend’s offer over the cell phone, I was overwhelmed by her generosity.
Knowing that wedding plans were on our agenda and having just joyfully married her daughter the past weekend, she was verbally listing some items from their reception for our use. Yards and yards of tulle, white electric hanging lights, water containers she had borrowed that more than likely we could borrow too, and help in time or advice.

Frugal friends are a gift beyond compare. Several women met us this past week at our church of choice for the service and reception bringing vast knowledge and frugal flair.
One friend assured us she knew where to borrow some pretty table covers and fabric for our cake table. Another stopped at several discount places on her way home and came up with simple, inexpensive décor that, when partnered with her creativity, will make our tables beautiful. Others knew where to get the most reasonable fabric and shared their coupons to make our purchases even less.

Dear friends have offered to help in our baking of a large quantity of cheesecakes to freeze ahead for the big day. (Daughter desires this dessert rather than wedding cake.) Already the pursuit is on to find the most economical ingredients. Can you believe dear women have offered to bake over 1,000 breadsticks for our celebration meal?

Many have shared their availability to serve, help with meal preparation, bake the groom’s cake, and more. No, these dear ladies are not the rich and the wealthy. They are just like you and me. Striving to live within their means, they have learned the value of community and looking for ways to help their friends. Often when I read or hear of the frugal life being lived by those who are “cheap, “ my heart breaks. Truly, the most generous people I know are often the ones who live carefully.

So even though the days are filled with a myriad of details and my mind is so often overwhelmed, my heart overflows with love and gratitude to the many friends who offer their frugal generosity!

How about you? Any encouraging tales of frugal generosity in your world?

I was really blessed this past week by a friend of mine paying a parking ticket for me – she said that she’d budgeted a certain amount of money for Christmas and had some to spare and could she pay it for us.

(the ticket was issued on a day where I didn’t get back to move my car in time because I was in banks dealing with the fallout of having my purse stolen and cards used, so was unavoidable)

Just come back from camping trip on Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia – 40oC today.
A Winnebago pulled up to our humble lil’ home on wheels & offered us a whole swag of cherry plums.
A lady next door to them gave me a new novel to read.
I love also being able to return the favours.
