Weekend links and a $10 Giveaway
Good reads this week
- 233 Ways to Make Money - I think I counted 24 ideas that hubby and I have used to make money in the past, and several more that might be worth looking into.
- Scared Broke - Scare tactics work just as well in advertising as they do in politics. In spite of our frugal intentions, we're all too ready to flip out the cash if we can be convinced that we or our families are in danger - any danger.
- A Short Guide to Consumer Disobedience - Read it. Then live it.
- Thrifty Fun at Home - With 10 kids and winter looming, I should probably download the free kitchen chemistry book.
- 2010 Dental Fee Calculator - How does your dentist compare to the national average? To local competitors?

- Bargain Babe - BargainBabe.com shares strategies, coupons, and inspiration to save on everyday expenses. I launched the site almost two years ago after leaving my job as a print reporter and journalist. My goal is to help my readers save money in a way that is practical and fun.
- A Few Words & Pictures - I mainly write about current affairs but have a particular interest in economy and living without or with very little money.
- 2 Make Ends Meet - We are a family of 5, living on one income and trying to make ends meet. I post recipes, homeschooling ideas, and encouragement for frugal living.
- Ourfrugallife - My wife and I are a young couple who live in Southern California. Living frugally in one of the most expensive areas in the country is a challenge, but very possible.
- The Military Brat - The Military Brat's "mission" is to be a fun place to learn ways to cut corners on your budget with coupons and deals and, ultimately, SAVE money. It's, of course, geared toward the military, but there are all kinds of goodies for EVERYONE!
The Giveaway
Really? Just one of you wanted $10? For a frugal bunch, you all are strangely uninterested in earning easy cash. ;)
Thank you, Jennifer, for the link to a post pointing out the erratic pricing in thrift stores. Like buying in bulk, shopping at thrift stores doesn't always yield the best prices. Never let your guard down!
Shall we try again? To enter to win $10, just leave a link to the best article you've come across recently. Next Saturday I'll choose my favorite link and will send $10 by Paypal to the reader who left the link.

Really, you want to know where MY favorite frugal place on the web is?
Two years ago Jacob published this article on A Tale of Three Species….
I really enjoy this blog for a few reasons. First off, he seems to be one who has “left the matrix” (on a few levels) and I think you will appreciate his writing for this reason.
Also, he writes largely in universals: He uncovers and/or discusses truths which are not confined by borders (so it is not specifically North American). You can see this demonstrated well in an even older post: Forget About Net Worth, Consider the Bottom Line. I can take so much from his writing because I can transfer this to my situation here in Europe.
Also note the date on that article is back to 2007 original post: you will find mostly Evergreen Posts over at Jacob’s … this would also be a reason why I keep coming back here. Although the style and intent are different (yet still by degrees a bit related), I find the posts here at frugal hacks to also be refreshingly evergreen.

I like the link today to recycling old Tee shirts by making T-shirt yarn! What a great idea! I love to crochet & that would definately make some interesting scarves for Christmas, or very cool pot-holders. Im going to start one tonight & will let you know how it turns out!

Great post about decorating on the cheap with some really lovely looking examples of table spreads that the author did with things they already owned.

Just about anything this lady puts up is interesting and valuable. What I really like though, is the wisdom surrounding her posts. If you scroll down, on the right are “My Moneysaving Ideas” and across the bottom is a running list of things she has found, asked for or been given free.

I thought that this was an awesome article. My daughter had an Easy Bake Oven and these recipes would have really come in handy! It can also be useful to a parent getting ready to buy their daughter an Easy Bake oven.

I also enjoyed this one, not only for the info on reusing a damaged shirt, but also due to the discussion thread that it created.

My favourite tips are things I can cook for myself that I would otherwise pay a lot of money for in the store. This week I am following the advice of an article about making your own Larabars:

Wanda,
It means that it’s waiting for me to see and approve it, probably because you haven’t left comments here before. Now that you’ve had 2 approved, your future comments will probably go right thru. Welcome to Frugal Hacks!

I recently came across this blog post about making stock. I’ve made stock in the past, but now that it’s just me and my husband (rather than when I was back living in my family home) it takes us a while to build up enough bones or whatever to make it worthwhile making stock.
As a direct result of this post I have started two bags in my freezer – one with bones/skin/gristle etc and the other with vegetable peelings.
Oh, and an extra bonus tip from me – I have a bag with leftover bits and pieces of bread. When I have enough I will use them to make bread pudding.

I know you are trying to stay off the computer…but, um, did you forget about this one too? Was there a winner and I’m just not seeing it? If there is a winner, you can place all blame on me for pulling you back to bloggyland. If there was no winner chosen yet then….pick me, pick me!!!

Thanks for the nudge, Stephanie. If you must know, “forgot” is not quite the right word. I was doing what I do best: procrastinating.
