I chose none of these reasons…I learned to be a frugal person from my grandmother and grandfather. It was a life lesson that I took to heart because of what is witnessed. My parents never had 2 nickles to rub together. My father traded cars twice a year. They smoked, my father drank, and it was just not an example that I was going to follow. My home life was never happy because of the money fights in the house. I saw that my grandparents who were frugal minded lived a happy life and had money in the bank and could do what they WANTED to do because there was money there without having to borrow or use a credit card.

I want to leave the planet to my grandchildren. We can’t afford the level of environmental rape committed on the earth, particularly when communities in Asia Africa and the south pacific live without clean water.

Angella,
Thank you. I meant to include a reason like that and forgot – I’m adding it now!

I had to pick “none of these”. With my current income, I should be living quite comfortably and able to help others who need it. But I am not beacuse I am still paying off debts that I incurred years (and years) ago…. Once that is paid off, I would have to change my answer to “I want to be a good steward of my resources”. At least I have learned from my mistakes ;-)

I want to stay home and educate our children, I don’t want to go back to work, and my husband much prefers it this way. That means being careful. God has chosen to lead us through a path that lead to enormous spiritual growth for our whole family, and also medical bills. Through that He provided so that we are debt free, but He also required sacrifice on our part.

So we don’t have to be frugal, I could go back to work, but we choose to be frugal because we are choosing something more important than stuff.

I checked three of your answers, but I think I have another reason too. I just think it is kind of fun to make something out of (almost) nothing, to find a clever way to adapt some old thing for a new use, to find a way to fix something rather than buy a new one. I guess it is almost a game to see how resourceful I can be.

I also had parents who were frugal and not wasteful, and I’m sure that has affected me.

Also, I think that a frugal (yet generous) lifestyle fits in nicely with my Christian beliefs.

I’m trying to live more frugally so that I can finish school without taking any student loans. There are other reasons – wanting to build a rainy day fund, wanting to be more generous, etc – but this is the big one right now. I want to go to grad school once I finish my undergrad degree, so graduating without school debt is a very big deal.

I’m frugal because I incurred so much debt in my 20s and then ended up unemployed. I lost my home and pretty much everything else I had. At this point, I have a job and I’ve decided to buy only what I need and sock everything else away for a rainy day. I learned the hard way that rainy days do come and sometimes last for over a year. I don’t want to be caught in the storm penniless ever again.

I am gollowing the example of my parents. I mend, repair, remake, and make do quite often. Even though I don’t have much money or income, doing it the frugal way makes sense. When I have more money, I will still be as parsimonious as I am now.
