Dave Ramsey Quotes

Posted by: kimc on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

My husband and I recently saw Dave Ramsey live at a Total Money Makeover seminar.  While what he said was almost straight out of his books,  I have to admit there was something very exciting and motivational about attending the seminar.  It felt to me like we were making a public commitment.  We have instituted many of his principles over the years, and now I think - I hope - we're ready to go all out.

I tried to take notes, but when I got home all I found in my notebook was a list of great quotes.  They were new to me, and maybe they'll be new to you too.

We've all heard Dave Ramsey say, "Live like no one else, so that later you can live like no one else!"

But have you heard him say...

Money is not evil...Money makes you more of what you are now. If you're a greedy jerk without money, you'll be a greedy jerk with money too.  But if you enjoy giving to others even when you didn't really have much to give, just think what you'll be able to do when you're rich!

Dude, when you fall that far, you don't really bounce back.  It's more of a splat. Said in reference to his early financial rise and fall before he became the Dave Ramsey we all know and love.

You ever blame somebody else when you do something stupid?  Turns out McDonald's really does serve hot coffee. I don't remember the context of this particular statement, but I suspect we've all been there.

Quit taking money advice from broke people...I don't need to write a book on growing hair.  I'm obviously not good at it. And I won't ever be writing a book on how to improve your memory.  But child training, or a large family in a small house?  You betcha!

Money is 80% behavior, 20% head knowledge.  It's what you do, not what you know.

If the lottery worked, rich people would pay poor people to stand in the line for them. Too funny, and too true!

There's a great place to go when you're broke: to work.  ~Dave Ramsey's grandmother

An emergency fund can turn a crisis into an inconvenience. No matter how you cut it, it still hurts to pay for a new transmission.  But yes, it hurts less if you have the emergency fund to cover it.

Money is like manure.  Left in a pile, it stinks.  If you spread it around, it'll grow some stuff.

I have done mathematical research, and I found that 100% of foreclosures take place on houses with mortgages.  So here's a plan: Pay off your stinkin' house! Who doesn't love Dave Ramsey's math?

You don't deserve anything until you save and pay for it. So much for the entitlement mentality.

"No" is a magic word that will set you free.  You don't get to say "yes" until you've said "no" for  a while.

Your budget must balance!  You are not Congress!

Those who don't manage their money will always work for those who do.

I am a FPU coordinator and I don’t know if you heard this or not, but he’s offering a special as well for one free FPU class to anyone who is interested. You sign up on the website and they’ll email you the locations near you and the dates for you to go.

My husband and I did it on our own after reading the Total Money Makeover and finally got around to taking the class and it was a great experience!

“I have done mathematical research, and I found that 100% of foreclosures take place on houses with mortgages. So here’s a plan: Pay off your stinkin’ house!”

You gotta love an ‘expert’ who says things off the top of his head, true or not. Houses can be foreclosed by homeowner’s associations for not paying the homeowner’s fee or for not following the homeowner’s association contract…. even if there’s no mortgage on the property. Try not paying the property taxes on your totally-paid-for house and see what happens!

Although some of Ramsey’s saying are kinda’ cute, some are downright misleading. There are many, many folks out there who may struggle and succeed at wiping out their debt, but guess what? They are never going to be rich, because there just isn’t enough income for that to happen. They are never going to ‘live like no one else’, implying that they will be financially set and have no financial worries once they are out of debt.

But I guess it’s best to take these little sayings very lightly and not think too much about their validity. :-)

Kathy,
You might be right. On the other hand, I may have missed a word when I was taking notes. Maybe he said “bank foreclosures.” At any rate, I agree that we miss the point when we over-analyze the precise wording he uses to communicate a solid principle. Let’s just agree that in the vast majority of cases, he’s absolutely right.

I’m a huge Dave fan. My husband and I are taking a refresher course right now because the last time we took it we began working on baby steps 1, 2,and 3, and were so focused on accomplishing them that we didn’t really focus on the rest of his advice. Now we are past those three steps and ready to progress. I think when he says “live like no one else” he is not saying that everyone will wealthy. It’s a fact that a majority of Americans are living with huge amounts of debt and are adding to that debt with impulse and “I deserve it” purchases. Living like no one else to me means debt free and paying cash for well thought out purchases.

i like watching dave ramsey on foxbusiness..of course, he says nothing more than what is common sense-and he makes a living with it. so, it only makes sense to me that if you use the common sense he does, you too can make a living at whatever you chose to do and lead a pretty good life no matter how humble it might be.

I love these quotes — and Dave Ramsey’s philosophy. Last year, my husband was one of many who found himself job hunting when the company he worked for “went under”. I was so grateful that we had scrimped and saved and paid off the house during the fatter years! So many of our friends in similar job situations were panicked, and couldn’t sleep, and had no peace during that time.

The McDonald’s comment refers to a woman who, after purchasing coffee from McDonald’s, proceeded to stick the cup in between her legs to hold it as she drove. It spilled, it burned her, and she sued McDonald’s for not having sufficient labeling that it was hot. Hence why all coffee lids now say “Caution: Hot.”

Our church offers Financial Peace University, and while I haven’t take it, several of my friends have shared the thoughts with me and they seem like practices my husband and I already do.

Hands down, the funniest way to get this point across is this Saturday Night Live video. (It is clean – trust me.) It’s Steve Martin & Co. talking about how to pay for things with cash, not credit. Hilarious!!!

Hey Kathy: you gotta be an idiot to not pay you property taxes or homeowners association Ripoff fees, when you got a paid for house. And if one can’t afford to pay them then maybe one shouldn’t be living there. So I agree with Mr. Ramsey, 100 percent of foreclosures happen on a homes with a mortgage. Also if one follows his common sense advise, yes maybe they won’t be rich but act your wage, live below your means and you can have a nice comfortable life rather than stressed out and unhappy every day!!! And if your broke follow daves grandmothers advise: here’s a great place to go when you’re broke: to work.  ~Dave Ramsey’s grandmother
