We do work extensively with Samaritan Ministries, helping their members save on medical bills by negotiating reductions with the health care providers.

We also work with other medical sharing organizations, employers and health plans across the country to assist their members or employees with large medical bills. We negotiate or mediate on the patient's behalf to find solutions that work for both the patient and the health care provider.

While we do not offer our services directly to the public, our site, http://www.thekarisgroup.com, has some helpful information in the Resources section for anyone seeking to learn more about the health care billing system.

We have not done any work with Christian Financial Ministries in some time. The information on their site about The Karis Group is rather old.

Great post, and thanks for the tips! We are in the process of joining Medi-share, which is very similar to your Samaritan Ministries, and I'm sure these tips will come in handy. I never thought to ask for a clergy discount!!!

I work in billing for a major hospital system.. in my state we discount self-pay accounts by approximately 43 - 56% (depending on the hospital). Each hospital/hospital system has negotiated such a discount with each insurance company they work with on a regular basis, so we extend that same discount to those with no insurance. Also, it's worth asking what type of programs the hospital provides for those who are not insured or who are under-insured.

I ask for a discount on every single medical bill we receive. (We don't have insurance.) I'm hardly ever turned down. It's really very easy and pays huge dividends for the little time it takes to ask.
