Fix, Freeze, Feast
Have you ever been searching for something, but didn't really know what you wanted until it was found? I have. Recently I had the opportunity to scan the book, Fix, Freeze, Feast, co-authored by Kati Neville and Lindsay Tkacsik. My excitement grew as I flipped through the pages and realized this was just what I was looking for! My purchase was made through VisionForum.com and I have been thrilled with the contents of this book.
The reason Fix, Freeze, Feast has been such a found treasure is that each October, my daughter and I plan to do one of those "big cooks" and have our freezer packed and ready to raid. You see, my family works together during my husband's "busy season." This unique opportunity allows us to be a benefit to my husband while providing lessons in family harmony. However, long, physically demanding days make coming home to cook dinner and to prepare for the next day's feed a challenge. Having some meals in the freezer would be so helpful.
The truth is that these meal preps have not taken place. Perhaps this is due to distant memories of past mega-cooking sessions which left me exhausted and frazzled, or maybe that our October never seems to have the extra time we dream about. However, this year will be different thanks to Fix, Freeze, Feast. This book simplifies the meal prep experience. Many of the recipes do not call for large amounts of cooking ahead. Meats are often frozen raw with added sauces or marinades. (It is important to note that the authors caution that cooked sauces must be cooled before adding to uncooked meat.) This is not really a casserole cookbook but could be so adapted if desired.
What I think makes this manual a jewel is:
- The ingredients can be purchased at warehouse clubs in bulk amounts
- Sample shopping lists are included
- The recipes go from simple to gourmet
- There are even some recipes written for vegetarians
- Breakfast, lunch and snacks recipes are included for freezer readiness
Another real plus to me is that instructions for cooking the frozen items are in the back of the book and permission is granted for photocopying. I will be attaching my instructions to the plastic freezer bags for handy reference when ready to cook.
I realize that batch-cooking books abound, but Fix, Freeze, Feast, appeals to me because it is adaptable to many different time and cooking scenarios. This resource may be what you have been looking for as well! Has anyone tried using this book, or do you have another one to recommend?

Something else you might look into is http://onceamonthmom.com/ She basically outlines a months worth of meals each month with all the ingredients and instructions. The ingredients are enough for two families of four each. The process is meant to be done with a cooking buddy and you each come away with your share of it at the end of the day. I wish I was able to do this right now because it would make my life so much more simple. Good luck with your project.

I HIGHLY recommend The Freezer Cooking Manual from 30 Day Gourmet (30daygourmet.com). Recipes that use everyday ingredients are featured – all have passed the test of their families. It’s an EXCELLENT resource and really helps to stretch your budget. We like to buy meat at its lowest price, then prepare multiple meals using that ingredient!
