Snowing Down South
After hunting about for a year for a slip I liked- which meant affordable. Which meant cotton so it didn't cling and make me miserable in hot weather. Which meant large enough to fit me loosely and comfortably without hiking up to my hips when I sat down. Which meant long enough to not look ridiculous (I think it does look awful when I wear a dress to my shins and the slip is just to the knees and the dress is light weight enough that you can tell). I am not picky, I just like things just right.
And then I discovered loose flowing gauzy skirts at the thrift shop, gauzy night gowns, and light weight summer dresses. Some dresses and gowns I cut off the part above the waist and put in elastic for the waist. Others work with just the sleeves and/or collars removed. Now my slips also do double duty as skirts- I can mix and match and wear the blue gauzey skirt as a slip beneath the blue and green skirt, and the next day I can wear the blue and green skirt underneath and wear the blue gauze skirt on top.
And it mostly doesn't matter if the hem of the slip skirt hangs down a couple inches from the top skirt- it just looks like a border that belongs.

This sounds like a great idea. I’ve layered skirts in the winter for added warmth.
With very thin cotton fabrics, do you find that they tend to cling to each other, or do they move freely?

The thin, gauzy cotton seems to me to move freely. I use thicker skirts for slips in the winter for warmth, too.

Wow, this really solves a problem I’ve had. I’ll be off shopping on Monday. I don’t think I would have ever thought of that. Thank you SO MUCH! I’ve got lots of resale shops around me, so I’m sure to find a few I can use.

I’ve had trouble finding cotton slips too, but discovered it isn’t very hard to make them using eyelet. Use french seams and leave enough wiggle room so it isn’t binding.
