Cheerful Frugality After The Holiday
Independence Day is not a big holiday for consumers. Fireworks and Old Navy flag tees aside, almost everything one needs to celebrate can be improvised at home.
Perhaps that's why I always see the red, white, and blue on super-clearance by the end of the month. Last year, I picked up some rustic Americana paper plates for 10-cents a pack. They looked just country enough to go with a dinner basket or picnic.
As you do your regular grocery shopping, keep an eye out for post-holiday items that can be used for other occasions.
- stars
- red, white, and blue sprinkles
- bunting
- plates, cups, napkins, straws
Do you have any frugal holiday hacks to share?

We have extra buns leftover from the 4th of July (guests brought extras), and we’ll be using some for a birthday party next weekend. But, we may freeze some too for using on Labor Day, or on the bf’s birthday in August.
So, if you see buns on sale, buy extra and freeze them. Then let them thaw out before the party. Toss them in the oven if you want to bring back some extra crispness.

Well, our Canada Day colours are simpler: red and white. So we can often re-use what’s left from Christmas and Valentine’s Day in July! (red napkins etc.) (If you were super-frugal I guess you could save some candy canes that long?)

Grill meats are greatly reduced, I love stocking the freezer after any summer holiday.

To go along with the stocking up on buns idea: they make garlic bread–especially hot dog buns.
