Frugal Pleasures

Posted by: DL on Thursday, May 21st, 2009
I admit it.  Sometimes the frugal life can feel a bit "heavy."  You know, when there are some unexpected expenses that stretch the already stretched budget, or when life gets so hectic that some frugal choices seem overwhelming.  That's when I remember the Biblical advice, "a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness" and take some time to reflect on my frugal pleasures.

Some of my frugal pleasures are:

hanging clothes, soft breeze and sunshine
tantalizing smell of left-over soup made from saved broths and a bit of this and that
driving my "antique" car showing its age but paid for
walking in the neighborhood with my dear husband
drinking smoothies made from overripe bananas and homemade yogurt
conversation over Starbucks coffee with my daughter and a Swagbucks gift certificate
being beat at Scrabble by my son
drinking sun tea on my porch
listening to birds rejoicing at the rain
using rainwater in my garden'
"show and tell" when I snagged a good deal
perusing frugalhacks.com
bringing home milk when I find one outdated
garlic pasta for dinner
homemade bread in the freezer
going one more day without using the air conditioner
dried grass from my yard as plant mulch
stones found in the ground for landscaping
99 cent day at Goodwill
finding just what I need at a yard sale

What are your frugal pleasures?

I agree with all of those, though my personal favorite is 99 cent day at goodwill.

Hanging laundry for sure. Also, my children rejoicing in the simple already owned by someone gifts – most recently a red tricycle found on craigslist for a fraction of the new cost, to which my three year old dramatically exclaimed, “I always wanted a red bike” – the rust, didn’t matter to her.

My list looks a lot like yours, but I’ll give it a shot:
diapers flapping on the clothes line
happy children sharing treats
the first green bean from our garden…and strawberry…and cucumber…
the smell of homemade bread
finding the very thing I was looking for, on clearance or at a thrift store
success when we try to make something ourselves for the first time – or the 6th.

I personally like changing out the last of the normal light bulbs for high efficiency CFLs. Or repairing a small appliance rather than buying a new one I don’t need. Those are my moments.

Finding name brand clothes for $.50 each!

Celebrating frugal “victories” with friends, spouse, and children.

Being home with my children instead of locked in some office cubicle.

Teaching others to find the fun in being frugal.
