Cheerful Frugality Yard Sales
In my neck of the woods, 3 constants cheer me through spring:
- daffodils, dogwoods, and redbuds in bloom
- the great celebration of Easter
- followed shortly thereafter by yard sale season
I've already deviled the leftover eggs, and now I'm organizing my family's yard sale envelope. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to purchase most of our needed household goods, gifts, and clothing at rock bottom price over the next few months.
Here are a few yard sale tips to get you in the mood:
--Keep small bills and coins in a zippered envelope. Free trial makeup bags work great! I keep a small coin purse for the kids.
--Make a list of things you'd like to find. Thinking about items ahead of time makes them jump out at you when you scan the sale.
--Get out of the car. You can't see what's in boxes and tables without a little legwork. Some of my best buys have come from the least promising sales!
--Think through the year's gift and entertaining needs. I considered a Christmas for the birds party, and now I have a 25-cent bag of red birds with which to decorate.
--Look for anything you'd normally buy at the store. If you use Windex, why not pay 10-cents for that nearly full bottle at the moving sale? Most of my cleaners and gardening supplements come this way.
Yard salers are a cheerfully frugal group, with dew-stained shoes and travel coffee mugs filled from home. Work fast, but make time to smile at your fellow shoppers. Here's to a successful spring season for all of us!

Good thoughts as I’m gearing up for my spring sale. Another thing, I always wear a particular pair of overalls that have deep pockets for throwing money in until I can get it in a safe spot.

Thanks for the advise. You are so right you have to get out of the car to find the best deals.

And it’s good karma to buy a cookie from the little kid who has a stand in his front yard.
