Reader hacks for 3/5

  1. Carrie says:
"I HATE wasting time at the grocery store! My girlfriend told me to sign up for the food lion shoppers companion email to see the savings and even look at the weekly flyer without picking through my newspaper. It REALLY helps me plan my meals for the week, whatever is on sale!"   editor's note: Many local/regional chains make their ads available online.  You might be surprised at what a google search will unearth.
  2. Lacy is really excited about a new coupon database!
  3. Noah knows how you can get gym equipment for free, or nearly free.
  4. Alison has an Automatic Shower Cleaner Hack:
"I drilled two holes in the base of the empty refill bottle, one for filling and the other for air displacement. Using a funnel and while the refill was still in the shower cleaner unit, I filled the hole with my own, cheaper bathroom cleaner. Then I put clear tape over the holes until the next refill time. using your own solution is a good $2 cheaper than purchasing the refill. (The unit is designed to not be refillable so you can't fill it from the spout) Make sure you use a cleaning solution that is not too thick, it needs to be the same consistency as the original cleaning solution.."
  5. Consumer Reports published an article about home video rentals where high marks went to Netflix and Redbox.
  6. Allison thinks you should turn loose change into a holiday savings fund - but don't make the same mistake that everyone else does.
  7. Jillian found a hot deal on diapers:
"I don't know how long this will last, but for anyone who is using disposable diapers, there is a deal on Diapers.com where you can get a rebate by going to
http://www.diapers.com/helpcenter/parenting.htm and telling them you DON'T want the free subscription to Parenting Magazine. The rebate is for $14.97.
On top of that, if you order $49 or more worth of diapers (easy to do, two boxes..your best bet is one big box and one small one, adds up to about $51), if you use code: JILS9270 you will get another $10 off your order, and because you went over $49, you get free shipping to your door. I ordered Pampers this way in a size 5 and it came to $0.145/ diaper, whereas Pampers usually costs $0.24 per diaper for this large of a size. My friend has a newborn and it came out to about 9cents per diaper! And yes, we cloth diaper, too, but like to keep disposables on hand."
  8. Penelope Pince has put together a resource as part of Identity Theft and Fraud Prevention Week at her blog and National Consumer Protection Week 2009 (Mar 1-7).It's a guide containing almost 100 links to government provided and recommended resources on consumer safety and how to recognize, avoid, report and recover from scams and frauds of various kinds - identity, phishing, SPAM, financial (banking, taxes, investment, mortgage, etc.), mail, telemarketing and more.
  9. Miranda thought you should know about BeatMyPrice.com, a revolutionary new price comparison site from the creators of RetailMeNot.com. It works differently because every search helps the site to grow, so the more people use it, the bigger it gets. Second, it incorporates RetailMeNot coupons into the results, offering deeper discounts.
  10. FreeShipping.org just got better: They just launched a new service that should make saving money online a whole lot easier. We're all looking for easy ways to save money these days!

“My Coupons” allows users to create their own FreeShipping.org page, showing coupons and free shipping offers to ONLY the stores they are interested in. Users can have their “My Coupons” page emailed to them once a week on the day of their choosing. They can also share their page with friends!

Some other great new features at FreeShipping.org include printable coupons that users can download and use directly in the store, and a robust new search engine with an “intelligent suggestion” feature similar to the one seen on Apple.com.

FreeShipping.org now has over ONE THOUSAND stores represented on the site, with 1500 expected by June!
