Stores that give credit for bringing your own bags
A2JC4life asked on the Frugal Forum,
Can we maybe work on a list of what stores give credit for bringing your own bags? So far, I've only seen one that does this (Ukrop's, in Virginia). I'd love to know where to be checking, or if I'm overlooking something that my cashiers never thought to tell me.
Do you know of more?

Well, I know this might not be much help because I live in Canada but I know that, while it’s not “credit” for bags Superstore charges per bag, so in the end it’s kinda like credit.
I don’t think there are ant superstores in the USA because it’s called “the real canadian superstore” LAWLS

Whole Foods offers bag credits, or you can choose to donate the credit to charity.

Kroger gives $.03 credit for each bag I bring when shopping there. This is in western Kentucky.

Giant stores (owned by Stop & Shop) gives you a .05 credit for each bag you bring. I assume Stop & Shop does the same.

Also, IKEA doesn’t give you credit, but you don’t get charged .59/bag by using your own. If you don’t have your own, you have to pay for theirs.

I had heard that you got a .05 credit from Target but I haven’t pursued it, yet.

Our local store which is a southern chain “Brookshires and Brookshire Brothers” give you a credit on your receipt for each bag you use of your own. So you may ask. I did not know til one day while I had my bags being used and the clerk said something. I was politely surprised.

The local Albertson’s here in the Central Coast of California gives a .05 credit per bag that you bring in. Trader Joe’s does not give a credit, but you get an entry into their monthly gift certificte ($25) drawing.

I live in Colorado, and we have a small grocery store/ health food store called Sunflower Market. Apparently New Mexico, and Arizona also have these stores. Anyway, they give a 10 cent credit for every bag that you reuse of theirs. When you are buying for 8, that can add up!

Since you mentioned Ukrops I know about where you’re located since I’m near there too.
If you’re in Richmond, VA – Ellwood Thompsons, Good Foods and Krogers also give you cents back.
I’ve occasionally even gotten one from Target.

Our Trader Joe’s offers a raffle each week, and you get a ticket if you bring your own bags.
I think IKEA has the right idea. The only thing that’s going to make us remember our bags is if it costs us when we don’t…

Huh — I have never received a credit at Kroger or Target.
Though I almost never shop there, I do get a credit at Marsh, which in an Indiana grocery store.

Fry’s (Kroger affiliate) gives $.05/bag, as does Sprouts (farmer’s market type chain mostly in AZ and CA).

Albertsons gives a .05 credit per bag here, as does Roths groceries. Safeway gives a .03 credit, I think, and I’m pretty sure Fred Meyers also gives one, but I’m not sure how much. That’s here in NW Oregon, and most major grocery stores do this. I almost always use at least a few of my own bags, but at some stores I don’t pay enough attention, like at Winco, to know if they give a credit or not. It nevers hurts to use your own, just in case.

I did not know that Target would give you a credit for bringing your own bag. I’ll have to remember that.
And as far as Giant is concerned, the Giant stores in Pennsylvania DO NOT give a credit for bringing your own bags. The manager of mine told me that once they started selling reusable bags, they stopped offering a credit. That sort of irritates me, especially since Shop Rite DOES offer a credit.
Unfortunately, Shop Rite is more expensive than Giant, so a bag credit doesn’t make up for how much more I would spend shopping at Shop Rite. Too bad, too. I like their stores better.
Here’s a post I wrote on grocery shopping on a shoestring: http://suddenlyfrugal.wordpress.com/2008/08/26/grocery-shopping-on-a-shoestring/ Soon after I wrote this post, I stopped using Shop Rite at Home and went back to shopping at Giant, bag credits be damned.

I should add that Shop Rite gave a $.03 credit for reusing plastic/paper bags and a $.05 credit for bringing your own.
There’s this super cheapo supermarket that’s opening near me called Aldi that actually makes you leave a $.25 deposit to use one of their shopping carts–you get the money back when you return the cart, kind of like those luggage carts in airports. I don’t know how the store handles shopping bags, though.

WinCo gives you a .06 shopping credit for each bag you bring. However, many cashiers don’t notice the big pile of bags in your cart so you have to politely tell them, “I also have 6 bags” or whatever.
January 15th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Winco is discontinuing its bag credit next week and the Albertsons near me discontinues it in November. The Boise co-op gives .15 a bag and Fred Meyer does .05.

Our Aldi makes you pay for bags, although they often have leftover boxes at the front for free if you want to pack your food in them (or you can find empty boxes as you wander in the aisles and use them).
It is fine to bring your own bags. (The clerks toss — literally throw, it is hard not to wince as the cans go crashing in — the items into your cart, and you are expected to go to the counter that runs along the front of the store and pack it yourself. The funny thing is that I’ve read that the clerks at Aldi’s in England throw the items into the carts as well.)
And, yes, you do have to have a quarter deposit to use a cart.
It took some getting used to, but we really cut down on our Walmart shopping after Aldi opened up. Kroger is cheaper on some things than either store, but it is often harder in our case to get to Kroger.

In Central California, Winco gives $0.10 per bag you bring with you and it doesn’t matter what type of bag.

Thanks, everyone! Anyone know about Martin’s? We don’t have Giant here, but Martin’s is owned by Giant.

In Southern California, Albertsons gives a 5 cent credit when the clerk remembers to give it to you. Henry’s (health food store) gives 5 cents. The Ralphs (Kroger affiliate) gives points towards the store card, for which you get a rebate quarterly on purchases.

Annchan:
Actually superstore does give credit for bags when you bring reuseable ones, as long as you have their credit or debit card. When you do they give you points that can be redeemed for free groceries. You also get points just for using the cards and for certain groceries that you buy. I have been using both of my cards for a about a year and half now, and have 220$ worth of points to use.
This is in Saskatchewan, and I’m talking about the pc financial mastercard and checking account.

Stop & Shop and Hanneford’s in New Hampshire (I don’t know where else they might be) give .05 per bag. I usually check to make sure they gave me the credit, though (when I remember to).
January 17th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Superfresh also gives you credit when you bring your own bags. If I remember correctly it is 2¢ for paper or plastic, 3¢ for cloth shopping bags and 5¢ for the heavy duty plastic bags that they sell.
I keep an empty cube type tissue box filled with plastic grocery bags in my car trunk. I started doing this when my boys were little and cannot tell you how many times I was so thankful I had them. Now even if I forgot to put my cloth bags back in the car I always have bags for shopping and don’t lose out on my bag credits. An empty paper towel tube also works great for storing plastic bags.

I’m in the Dallas area in Texas. Albertson’s gives credit, but I’m not sure how much. One time the cashier gave me $1 off per bag, but I’m pretty sure she didn’t know what she was doing. That seemed really high.
Sprouts takes off 10 cents per bag.
I don’t know about other stores. I never seem to be able to remember to bring my bags in.

Our Kroger use to give us .05 for bring our own bags. They have discontinued it here in my part of Texas. I’m bummed about it.

Smith’s (Kroger) in Utah gives $0.05 per bag.

I worked for Fred Meyer and we gave a .05 credit on any type of bag a customer brought in. I currently shop at Winco which gives a .06 credit..even more then the .05 we get on cans or bottles

Safeway in Washington state gives a 3 cent credit if you bring your own bag. I have heard that Fred Meyer gives a 5 cent credit.
