10 New Reader Hacks for 1/12

Posted by: kimc on Monday, January 12th, 2009

Smart ideas from smart Frugal Hacks readers.  Many of these are related to the holidays, but if you're like me you still have a few last minute gifts to give or ship.  Or maybe you don't.  Go ahead.  Feel superior.  I like making you look good.

  1. LAL knows how to send gifts the cheap way.
  2. Noah shares The Completely Untechnical Guide to Saving on Your Phone Bill with VoIP.
  3. Marci often emails me great money-saving tips from Mary Hunt's Everyday Cheapskate.  Maybe you should take a look.  Incidentally, Marci has a giveaway going on her blog right now.  Go put your name in the hat to win a $20 gift certificate!
  4. Anna reports that Consumer Reports' Tightwad Tod blog posted 9 Tips for Last Minute Shoppers recently.  It has some good tips for keeping cool under holiday pressure and getting good deals on good gifts.  She also tipped us off to The ABCs of gift returns.  It includes some little-known tips and caveats for returning unwanted merchandise. Thought you might find the content useful during this post-Christmas period.
  5. Frugal Hacks was recently mentioned in a list of Top 100 Blogs For Small-Business Cost Cutting Inspiration.  Check the other 99 for some great new bookmarks.
  6. Momma's hack: Making homemade laundry detergent. It takes 20 minutes, is significantly more frugal than store bought detergent, and works infinitely better.
  7. LAL is giving away 3 copies of Turbotax and a book about personal finance in retirement!
  8. Mother Hen is determined to learn to shop with coupons, and she promises to take you along with her.  Read about her first outing.
  9. Life in a Shoe has a series on Big Family in a Small House.  It's 4 parts so far, with more to come.  Yes, that's my personal blog.  Come visit the family, and we'll have a nice chat.
  10. Behemoth.com gives 2 free downloads daily.  These are digital versions of audio recordings that typically sell for $8 or more in their catalog.  You do have to set up an account with payment information, but there is no charge to download the daily freebies.  The freebies are changed daily, so check regularly!

Th-th-th-that's all, folks!
