The Lowly Toilet Brush

Almost three years ago (unless it was two, we are having a family debate) we moved from the little one bathroom house up the road to this larger (much larger) four bathroom house.

Yet it was only last month when I decided we could not keep shifting the single toilet scrubber we owned from one bathroom to the next any longer. I do not know if it is because I am lazy (after all, I am not the one carrying the toilet brush around, it's one of my 6 daughters) or just that virulently allergic to shopping.
At the grocery store, I looked at .99 cent toilet brushes and five dollar designer receptacles for the toilet brushes and shook my head over the folly of our times. The brush is the part that does the work, the receptacle only hides the evidence and keeps the slime off the floor, admittedly an important job, but five bucks worth of importance? I thought not.

So I brought home three unattached and naked toilet brushes and rummaged around in my pottery shed (that's a glorified word for the cupboard in the garage where I keep my hand spade and old plant pots) and found three clean plastic pots I bought for .25 each last fall when gardening things went on sale- they were cute, too.

As it turns out, they are easier to clean than the five dollar designer version, having fewer nooks and crannies.

Of course, I realize a truly frugal zealot would do without the toilet brush and use gloves and a sponge. On the other hand, the handle gives better leverage.
P.S.
Here's why I took so long to post my Frugal Hack post today.=)

Is that a typo? Why did you buy 3 toilet brushes- didn’t you only need one?

We only needed one in the little house. NOW, as Patrick said, we have four bathrooms on two floors, and four toilet brushes is more convenient than toting the one from place to place.

Your site is delightful and you write very well. I enjoyed the toilet brush post. Yep, you needed 4 toilet brushes and go going on getting the goods. My dear mother used an old wash cloth, Ajax or Comet cleanser for years to clean her’s. Somewhere (maybe in her 70’s) she bought a toilet brush. She lived to 92. :) Vist me at http://www.ChatWithVera.blogspot.com
