Over-the-Top Delicious!

Hi, I'm Mother Hen.  I blog at Ship Full O' Pirates where I have fun talking about my five Pirates, and my Princess, and homeschooling, and marriage, and laundry and whatever else comes to mind. :D

This week is the last of my 5 week long Create -a-Casserole series.

Here are the casserole categories again.

  1. Framework
  2. Sauce
  3. Meat
  4. Add-Ons
  5. Toppings

Personally, I think that you need not use any topping other than cheese on a casserole.  I will conceed, however, that legitimate reasons may exist for not using cheese as a casserole topping.  Such as there not being any cheese in the fridge, which really is more of a legitimate reason for going to the grocery store than for eating a cheese free casserole, but maybe your fridge is empty of cheese AND you have a flat tire.  Then you may have to put something else on your casserole.  So, if the afore mentioned reasons/excuses describe you, then you need to be aware of a few alternatives.

And since it'll be Thanksgiving before you know it, I'll give you a delicious version of the...

Traditional Green Bean Casserole

Cut the bacon in small pieces and brown it along with the chopped onion.  Add the soup and rinse the can out with about ¼ cup water and add that to the soup and bacon mixture.  Add the cheese and the drained green beans.  Put it all in a casserole dish, cover it with foil and bake at 350° for about 30 minutes or until it's bubbly.  Take it out of the oven and take the foil off.  Sprinkle the french fried onion rings over the top and bake for an additional 10 - 15 minutes.  Feel free to double or triple this recipe if you have a large gathering at Thanksgiving.  Just be sure you have a large enough casserole dish!

Sounds like some good ideas. You can also use mashed potatoes, bar-b-que sauce or tomatoe paste. Of course you always add your own dash of seasonings to them.

I love the nekkid casserole comment – too funny! And great ideas for toppings. I usually quit at cheese too, since everybody loves it and we always have 10 or 15# in the freezer.
I can’t believe I never thought to put bacon in the green bean casserole. And Thanksgiving is just around the corner…

Well, I think it’s OK to use other toppings IF there is cheese IN the casserole. ;)

I always make boring old green bean casserole for Thanksgiving – the Campbell’s Soup way. It is yummy, and everyone loves and expects it at my Thanksgiving feast, but I think it’s gettin’ old! Thanks for a delicious sounding twist! I just revised my Thanksgiving menu!
