I knit, which some consider an expensive hobby--and it can be. I like to use quality materials, which often means spending more at once. But when you take into account the amount of time it takes me to knit something, plus the fact that I get a practical object at the end of it, it's really much cheaper than, say, going out to bars with friends every weekend.
