The Single Gal and Entertainment
Just because you're single does not mean that you don't want to have fun! There are plenty of free and/or inexpensive things to do not require a mate. Read on!
1. Start a gormet group- Like fine wines, cheeses, and fancy dishes, but can't afford to go out all the time? Don't want to whip up a gormet meal for one? Start a gormet cooking club with other like minded friends. One a month (or once every three months, or whatever fits your schedule and budget) your or someone in your group will host a party. Everybody brings a fancy dish, everyone goes home with leftovers. It's not free, but it will be less costly and more exciting than meeting at the bar.
2. Learn a new skill. Have you ever wanted to learn to sew, learn to speak Dutch, or design a webpage? This is an ideal season of your life to cultivate new skills! While this is not always free, there are inexpensive options for many types of classes. Check the extension office, community colleges, libraries, and YouTube. Don't put off learning ballet until next year, start now!
3. Cultivate quiet, inexpensive, solitary hobbies. My favorite hobby is reading, which is free at the library and very inexpensive with services like Paperback Swap.
4. Free events in your hometown. Check the paper, particularly the Sunday paper. Even smaller towns often have free or inexpensive lectures, art gallery openings, films, guest speakers, church activities...two of my favorite memories involve going to random free events found in the newspaper- an apple cider festival and a free mini horse show. Go to something random and see what happens!
5. Find a church with an active singles group. Churches strive to be so family friendly that it can sometimes be alienating to the single people in the group. Find a church that has a lot of activities that are not always geared towards couples or families with children. Nothing is wrong with churches that are family friendly, of course, but not everybody is at that season in their life. Finding a church with a variety of people at different times in their life can offer a lot of enrichment, entertainment and a lot of friends!

I also think it’s good to think about the cost over time with hobbies. I knit, which some consider an expensive hobby–and it can be. I like to use quality materials, which often means spending more at once. But when you take into account the amount of time it takes me to knit something, plus the fact that I get a practical object at the end of it, it’s really much cheaper than, say, going out to bars with friends every weekend. And I think it’s more fun, too, but that’s just me.
