Frugal DIY Wall Art

A fast, fun, and frugal way to dress up your walls at home is to use canvases. The cheapest way that I have found to get them is to purchase them from thrift stores. The goodwill I go to almost always has them either blank or already painted on.

For those that are blank, a fun way to dress them up is to do this simple little project that I stole from Simple Mom when she shared some of her ideas for dressing up lackluster walls.

My 4 year old daughter and I did this project together. All we needed was a few pages of scrapbook paper, a bowl, a pencil, scissors and mod podge.

Cut out circles from the scrapbook paper and mod podge-ed them onto the canvas.

For those that are already painted on, a fun way to fix them up to your liking is to simply wrap them in fabric. For this project, I like to shop fabric store remnant sections for pieces that are on deep discount. For just a couple dollars, fabric that is otherwise not enough to do much with can bring canvas to life.

I did this in my living room to add interest to a blank wall above my tv wall cabinet.

All it took was the pieces of fabric wrapped around canvas and stapled to the back. If you don't have a staple gun, you could probably use hot glue instead but I liked that the staple gun pulled the fabric tight around the canvas.

One idea that I would like to try is matting and framing children’s drawings. If the frames and mats matched, even very several very different works could look like a matched set, and much nicer than having them plastered all over the front of the fridge.
I also like framing simple greeting cards. With 3 frames from the dollar store and 3 vintage greeting cards, I can have a set with nearly any theme I want for about $3.

I agree, Kim that framing artwork and cards is way better than having them pile up somewhere or plastered to a fridge or cluttering the mantle. I need to do a bunch of artwork soon. My daughter has so much from school and I hate to throw it all away or have it shoved in a drawer where we never see it.
