Because I have three sons who like to play in the mud, the rain, the creek, and anywhere else that they can get dirty, I have trouble keeping clothes clean around here. Even when I do buy nice Sunday clothes, they often end up getting filthy by Sunday afternoon because they’ve rolled down a hill while I’m socializing after mass. I finally discovered a few ways to find inexpensive Sunday clothes and I wanted to share them:1. Find Old School Uniforms. My kids go to public school, but it’s a school that requires uniforms. In addition, there are at least 10 private/parochial schools in my area that require the students to wear uniforms. Here is what I have done that has worked well: I put a free ad in the newsletters of my neighborhood, three other local neighborhoods, and the newsletter of the local Catholic school. In the ad, I asked whether anyone had any boys’ uniforms that their kids outgrew. Nine different families contributed! I not only got my kids free school uniforms from some kids in my neighborhood, but I also got at least a year’s supply of Sunday clothes from a few families whose kids attend the Catholic school. The boys there wear white shirts and navy blue pants, so that’s what my kids wear to church now!

2. Check Out Freecycle.org. I cannot tell you how many bags of clothes I’ve gotten from this site. Membership at www.freecycle.org is free, and they connect you with your local group. Emails come through each day from people offering free items. There are free bags of clothes offered almost every day. Many of them are bags of clothes that are designer-brand and have barely been worn. I have identified a few fellow freecycle members that offer boys’ clothes in great condition, and whenever they offer clothes, I quickly respond. I pick up the free items from the person and I go through them. If I find clothes that are too small for my kids, I just pass them on to my neighbor.

3. Get Deals Automatically Sent to Your Email. Okay, I know that there are families out there that are frugal but draw the line at wearing hand-me-downs. There are quite a few websites out there that will allow you to enter the item you’re searching for and then they email you when it goes on sale.

For example, if you’ve never used www.pricepinx.com before, it’s a service where you tell them what you’re looking for, they monitor the price of the item, and they email you when the price drops.

My sister swears by www.waitable.com, which allows you to tell them what you’re looking for and what you want to pay for it. When the price drops to your requested price, waitable sends you an email with a link to buy the item. A similar service that my neighbor uses is http://wishradar.com, which also lets you set a price for what you’re seeking, and then they alert you when it drops to the requested price.
