The Goal of Being Frugal

THE GOAL OF BEING FRUGAL
Being frugal can be an exciting adventure. From clipping coupons to reading blogs, it's exciting to find a good deal. There's nothing better than seeing my wife come home with a bag from CVS that only cost her $0.64! The time she came home with 13 boxes of cereal for $1.00 was amazing!
Have you ever stopped to think why you are living a frugal life? It's easy to fall into the trap of trying to build wealth and gather stuff. I read many blogs each day that talk about being wealthy and I find a lot of useful articles, but I have to say that I do not share their goal. As Christians, my wife and I are convicted that there is more to being frugal than stretching our dollars as far as we can to build wealth.
Our goal is to be wise stewards of the money and possession God has given us, not to become wealthier. A steward is a money manager and God has put us in charge of handling His money and possessions. Our prayer is the same as in Proverbs 30:8-9. "Keep deception and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion. That I not be full and deny You and say, "Who is the Lord?" Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God."
Sometimes becoming too self sufficient with our wealth causes us to forget the source of it all, the Lord. Having too little can cause us to compromise our beliefs and do things that we know are unethical.
The end goal is never how much we have in the bank, but how much we glorify God with what He has given us. One way we give God glory is to freely share our frugal ideas and to give items from our stockpile to friends and family.
In the end, whenever we choose wisdom over wealth, we can learn how to handle money and possession in any and all situations. This will also protect us from a materialistic mindset. Whether we are given a little or a lot, we can be wise stewards that give God glory for the amazing blessings that He has given us!
Roger is the Frugal Husband who authors Ourfrugallife. He and his wife explore the art of spending money wisely for the glory of God.
