Cheerful Frugality Thinks Presidential
In honor of Presidents' Day, let me share a few presidential thoughts on frugality:
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. — Abraham Lincoln
Industry, thrift and self-control are not sought because they create wealth, but because they create character. --Calvin Coolidge
There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth, and pursue it steadily. Nothing but harmony, honesty, industry and frugality are necessary to make us a great and happy nation. --George Washington
I, however, place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared. --Thomas Jefferson
I have found out in later years that we were very poor, but the glory of America is that we didn't know it then. --Dwight D. Eisenhower
Wealth can only be accumulated by the earnings of industry and the savings of frugality. --John Tyler
Happy Presidents' Day!

Great post. I especially like the George Washington quote. If only more people realized that stuff and money are not the secret to happiness!

As a history professor, I loved your blog! Poor Jefferson…(he’s the love of my historical life)–he had great ideas about the public debt but he died with an incredible amount of consumer debt.
I have another quote for you. I’m reading David McCullough’s “John Adams” right now, and when writing Abigail bout how to raise their children, Adams said, “Let frugality and industry be our virtues.” Should we all be so virtous!

I wish with all my heart that ONE of the people running for office NOW had any idea of this kind of issue. I have a deep fear in my heart for the future that MY grand children and YOUR children will get in the years to come. This country is so far into debt I do not think there will ever be a balanced budget again. At least not in my life time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As always you are inspiring. Roxie
