Saturday Savings Smorgasbord: Wholesome Eating on a Budget

Posted by: guest on Saturday, January 26th, 2008

We all want to save money but I think all of us also care about the health of our families.

Filling our families up with cheap, processed food all the time will not be a frugal choice in the long-run. We'll pay for it in health problems, nutrition deficiencies, obesity-related issues, doctor's bills, and medical procedures.

As frugal zealots, how do we strike the balance between saving money on our grocery bill while at the same time feeding our family nutritiously?

I wrote some of my thoughts and ideas here. They are far from perfect as we are still baby-stepping our way towards better nutrition, but they might give you some practical ideas for cutting out more chemicals in your diet.

Kristy at Homemaker's Cottage delves into growing your own food, making your own white sauce, and how to get organic brands inexpensively in her post.

Looking for some ideas to reduce organic food costs? Ashlyn gives us 17 ways ways to do so.

Sarah talks about frugal and nutritious meal-planning.

For those of you with a Publix nearby, Lady Why shares some tips on inexpensive organic brands they sell.

Lindsay at Passionate Homemaking blogged about how she's actually reduce their grocery budget while incorporating more healthful eating into their diet.

All of these ideas and tips won't work for everyone, but perhaps a few of them might inspire you towards a better diet on a limited budget. And I'd love to hear from you. What are your favorite tips and ideas for wholesome eating on a budget?

Funny! I blogged about this yesterday on my Skinflint Sunday post!
I’m saving an amazing amount by growing our own veggies. It’s summer here in Australia, so the veggies are practically leaping out of the grpound and throwing themselves at us. Definitely growing our own food is healthier for us and my budget.

It seems that there is a ever-growing grass roots movement for healthy eating. We have even watched at the larger companies have bought into the them, sometimes tricking us with the word “organic” to the point that the govt’ had to put regulations on the very branding. We, I the house-wife/shopper, have tried to stay within my local market and shop the farmers around me. Purchasing fruit and vegi’s, mostly root in the winter, is not only cheaper but also greener and healthier. It’t better to eat canned pineapple then a fresh one because in KY there is no such thing. By the time “out of season” fruits and vegi’s reach us they have used up lots of gas, most of thier nutrients, and mostly a ton of our cash at the market. Tip: get to know your local growers. Some of mine even deliver. And a salad can be grown in a green box in a window.

I have been making a lot of salads with bulgur wheat lately. I absolutely love them. The original recipe came from Everyday Food and I have made lots of different variations. I’m planning to blog the recipes sometime really soon! Very delicious and cheap, too.
