Mrs. Elliot blogs at Unfolding Grace, where she finds and shares inspiration and truth in biblical womanhood, cottage life, and walking in the grace of Jesus Christ.
Why do you blog?
I never thought I would be a blogger! If someone would have asked me if I would ever consider starting a blog, I would have answered a resounding “No.” The idea of keeping an “online journal” just didn’t appeal to me. However, I just recently I discovered really useful blogs that kept me awash in great homekeeping ideas and new inspirations for living well. It made me realize there was a whole community of people out there that shared the same ideas, values, and beliefs as I did. All of you inspired me to join in the discussion and share some “bright moments” of my own. Plus, blogging is a great way to stay connected with friends and family.
How important is frugality to you? Casual interest, hobby, lifelong habit, or insane fanatical obsessive compulsion?
Living a cheerfully frugal life is very important to me. Although I enjoy shopping trips to thrift stores, finding the best sale, and clipping coupons, it’s much more than a casual interest or hobby for me. I’m hoping I don’t ever quite get to the fanatical obsession point, although as time moves on I definitely find myself edging closer. You know you love the frugal life when you can remember how much you paid for everything and proudly proclaim that you shop regularly at thrift and discount stores.
Define frugality in your own words. Do you think it means different things to different people?
Living frugally is all about finding the best things for everyday life in a creative way. There are all kinds of creative ways to find beautiful, special, and everyday items for less than full price. Some people think that living frugally is about deprivation or never having nice things. However, my experience in trying to live a more careful and frugal life has been punctuated with ingenuity, education, and making wise decisions about spending money. I’ve found you can almost always find the things that your heart desires if you cultivate patience and creativity.
Do you have any frugal heroes or role models?
I would have to say that Meredith, over at Like Merchant Ships is one of my favorite frugal role models. She is constantly posting about things that are not only frugal, but beautiful as well. That’s the kind of frugal life I strive to lead. In real life, I’ve learned a lot about frugal living from my Dad, Mother-in-law and Grandmothers. If I ever need practical advice about frugal living, they are always there to help.
How does the rest of your family feel about your frugal ideas?
My husband grew up in a house where coupon-clipping reigned supreme with a mother who made sure they were always equipped with the best for less. As such, we make a pretty good team, and love bargain hunting and cutting costs as much as we can. We even take trips to the thrift stores for fun, although I think I secretly enjoy it more than he does!

What a compliment!
I was so excited the first time I found Mrs. Elliot’s blog, because I could tell I had also found a kindred spirit.
“…you can almost always find the things that your heart desires if you cultivate patience and creativity.”
Not only is she an engaging writer, she has plenty of real-life examples to share.
