Showcase: Chief Family Officer
Tell me a little about yourself: who are you?
My name is Cathy, and I am the author of Chief Family Officer. I've been blogging since 2005, shortly after my first son was born. I've taken a couple of breaks, but I think I'm back for good this time. I seem to have really found my groove and am really enjoying what I'm doing. I post daily on family finances, parenting, and cooking, which just happen to be my three most favorite topics.
Do you feel your blog has a special niche of its own? Did it happen by design or by accident?
I do feel that CFO is a niche blog, mostly for parents of young children. However, about half of my posts, such as recipes or money-savings tips, are for everyone. This happened naturally, since I am a new parent, I love to cook, and I manage our family's finances.
What does frugal mean to you? Why be frugal?
To me, being frugal means being conscious of spending and spending wisely and deliberately. I am frugal because it's an important part of my overall plan to achieve my financial goals.
Did it take you a while to "find your voice," or do you feel you've always been the same as a blogger?
Definitely! In the beginning, I was blogging about almost everything, now I really try to stay on topic. I also try to post three to four times a day during the week, and at least once a day on weekends.
Do you have a favorite frugal site?
No, I don't have one favorite site, but I do have a bunch! One of the things I really like about the internet is the wealth of information and the community. I'm always finding new blogs and new sites to add to my reading list. That said, here are just a few of my favorites:
- The Dollar Stretcher - This comprehensive money site was my introduction to frugality, just a few months after I graduated from law school.
- Baby Cheapskate - I discovered this site when it was mentioned in Parents magazine, and I love all the deals that Angie posts. I've been recommending her site left and right.
- Free Money Finance - I generally find FMF to be on the same wavelength as I am when it comes to money.
- 2million - My Journey to Financial Freedom - I like 2million because he's more aggressive than I am, both in saving and investing. He often does something I wouldn't have thought of that makes me ask myself, "Would I do that?"
- Parent Hacks - While not exactly a site about frugality, many of the hacks posted end up saving money because they're about re-purposing something already in the house (or diaper bag).
For more of my favorite sites (I have way too many to list them all), check out the links section of CFO.
Thank you for taking time to participate, Cathy.

I love how Cathy sees herself as the family’s financial manager. She’s very much a professional, and it shows in her succinct highlights.
