Showcase: Bare Bones Gardening
The Bare Bones Gardener blogs from Australia at Bare Bones Gardening.
Tell me a little about yourself: who are you?
A qualified Gardener and a Disability Services Worker. Who hates paying for things that don't live up to their expectations. So is always looking for a cheaper or free way of doing things.
When did you start blogging?
August 2007.
Why do you blog?
To help others find easier ways of doing things.
How did you come up with your blog title?
It was the name of the old geocities freebie site I started in 2001. The username came from the site name.
Why be frugal?
Because I can't afford all the things I would like so I save when and where I can.
Do you think there is a downside to being frugal?
You don't get to keep up with the 'Jones's'
Do you feel your blog has a special niche of its own?
Yup gardening, because thats where I have some experience.
Did it take you a while to 'find your voice,' or do you feel you've always been the same as a blogger?
It has taken me a while to get a feel for the new style of web presence.
What do you know about your readers? What do you think draws them to your blog?
An interest in a common subject, our love of gardening.
Define frugality in your own words.
It means that I am able to spend money on my family that I would not otherwise be able to afford.
Do you think it means different things to different people?
Definitely, Everyone follows a different joirney into a common end answer to life's problems.
Do you have a favorite frugal site?
Haven't had a lot of time to go exploring out on the web these days, what with having two blogs, and my own website. a disabled child and working.
Does frugal living come easily for you or is it a struggle?
It is something I do automatically without thinking.
Do you have any frugal heroes or role models?
Anyone who comes up with a new idea or suggestion that works in with what I am doing.
Do you believe the saying, 'you get what you pay for'?
Nope. Too often we find that we do not get value for money with what we are buying these days.
Is it ever possible to be too frugal? How about frugal enough?
People have to find their own balance within this area. For instance there are certain things where I am willing to pay more than I necessarily have to, for things I prefer, eg a particular brand of coffee, rather than the cheapest possible.
How does the rest of your family feel about your frugal ideas?
Unfortunately teenage children don't always see things like their parents. As things like peer pressure to conform carries a lot more weight in their lives.
What was your worst or craziest frugal idea?
Jings, there's been so many failed or less than successful ideas, that I have tried.
