Showcase: At Home With Kris
Kris's blog is At Home With Kris. She has been blogging since 2005, but just recently moved to her own domain. She loves to blog about saving money, stretching herself to be a better wife and mother, homeschooling, her faith, and sometimes all of those things in the same post!
Kris, why do you blog?
I blog because I like to connect with other people who lead similar lives.
What does "frugal" mean to you?
Frugal to me means spending our money wisely and stretching it when we can. It also means sometimes spending money to save money!
What do you think it means to other people?
Everyone has a different view ... for some it's all about what they can get for free even if they don't use the item. For others, it means saving money to retire early. Everyone has their own motivations for spending their money wisely and we can all learn from each other!
Why do you want to be frugal?
We are frugal so that I can stay home to homeschool our children and to not have any major debt (i.e. credit card) as a hindrance to saving money for the future.
Do you think there is a downside to being frugal?
Yes. I sometimes get the "I want ..." attitude and get frustrated that the money isn't there when I want it to be.
Do you feel your blog has a special niche of its own?
Not necessarily. I blog about lots of things besides saving money.
Did it happen by design or by accident?
Blogging happened totally by accident!
Did it take you a while to "find your voice," or do you feel you've always been the same as a blogger?
I don't feel like I have a voice on the Internet per se. I just try to be honest with my postings and share what is really happening in my home.
What do you know about your readers? What do you think draws them to your blog?
I don't know my readers very well, but I know they are drawn by my honesty. I blog about "bad" things as well as the good things.
How important is frugality to you? Casual interest, hobby, lifelong habit, or insane fanatical obsessive compulsion?
It is important to me and I consider it a hobby that is useful in providing things we want.
Does frugal living come easily for you or is it a struggle? It comes easily now, but was a struggle in the beginning. Now we are used to the way we live and my kids even look to buy things on sale!
Do you have any frugal heroes or role models?
No one in particular ... I love hearing about how others save money and I learn different things from different people!
Do you believe the saying, "you get what you pay for"?
Yes, sometimes this is VERY true! However, I buy the cheapest appliances with the least bells and whistles because they all need to be repaired at some point and the less fancy items are cheaper to repair and/or replace!
Is it ever possible to be too frugal? How about frugal enough?
Yes, it is definitely possible to be too frugal ... some people buy things just because they are on sale and that is NOT saving money! Everyone has their own budget and idea of how frugal they want to be. There are some things that I won't do ... like buy used clothing. But we buy clothes from discount stores and on sale, so it's a compromise at times.
How does the rest of your family feel about your frugal ideas?
They are all on board with it! My husband thanks me all the time for taking good care of the money that he makes
We all have moments of glory and brilliance that we want to relive for the rest of our lives, right? What was your best ever frugal idea?
I do not consider this a moment of brilliance, but our best idea was for me to stay home and raise our children and to homeschool them. By staying home, I have the time to devote to planning menus, clipping coupons, baking our own bread and making yogurt, shopping sales, etc. By homeschooling, although we do not get a tax break, we do not have to spend money on fancy clothes or school supplies, fundraisers and all those other costs that seem to come with the public school system.
Thank you for your time, Kris.

I’ve been reading Kris’ blog for a while now. She has such a sweet, home-centered spirit!
I wish I could be as detail-oriented as Kris, who takes the time to share her CVS and grocery deals whenever she does a big shop.
