Showcase: The Random Account of Quasimodo

Quasi blogs at The Random Account of Quasimodo. Quasi is a 39 year old homeschool mom with an awesome husband and three amazing children: 17, 15 and 8. She is starting on her 12th year homeschooling. She blogs not only about homeschooling, but also on Christian homemaking and motherhood, frugal living, crafting, and anything else that strikes her fancy on any particular day.

Why do you blog?

I blog for a few reasons: (1) to get my thoughts straight and "on paper" so to speak; (2) in hopes to bless or help others the way the many blogs have blessed and helped me; (3) in order to have a central location where I keep thoughts, interests, websites, etc. that interest me; (4) to bring a smile to someone's face. :)

What does "frugal" mean to you? What do you think it means to other people?

Frugal, to me, means buying, producing, having quality things/a quality life for the price I'm willing to pay. It means not paying full price for something I may be able to find cheaper elsewhere. It means being smart with the money that my husband works so hard to bring home.

I like that you honor your husband by being frugal. What made you decide to be frugal?

For one thing, we are a one-income family, and it really helps! The reality is that I am glad I don't have a 9-5 job, and thankful that my husband prefers that I don't. I am so blessed to have a husband who doesn't mind being the sole breadwinner of the family, and this is my way of "doing my part" financially. If I am not bringing in an income, I can at least feel good about stretching my husband's hard-earned income.

Do you believe the saying, "you get what you pay for"?

Absolutely! I have worked for many years learning to be frugal, and at first, frugal used to mean getting the cheapest item. I got what I paid for many times and learned my lesson. Now, I tend to look for the most quality item to fit our family's need, for the cheapest price. Things seem to work out and last longer this way.

Is it ever possible to be too frugal? How about frugal enough?

Um, yeah. For me, too frugal is dividing two-ply toilet paper...it's just not my thing. Re-using ziploc bags is borderline too frugal for me, though I have done it, and it's a fine practice. I usually opt out of that in favor of using plastic wrap or something else I don't have to wash, store and make sure to re-use. That's just me tho.

How does the rest of your family feel about your frugal ideas?

My husband is glad for it, and my children are fine with it. My husband grew up in a frugal family, so it's normal for him, and in turn, my children have learned frugality simply out of necessity, as we are a one-income homeschooling family.

And now the obvious question: why do you go by Quasimodo?

Because the Lord is showing me that despite all the ugliness that has been in my life, there is something beautiful that He wants to bring out in me. My life, if you could describe it with a picture, would look like Quasimodo.....not the happy-go-lucky Quasi from Disney's Hunchback, but the really scary-beyond-belief Quasimodo, with a hunched back, disfigured face. This was what my life looked like. Oh, not on the surface, but when you really got to know me, it was evident that there was something wrong. God has been freeing me from so much of that ugliness. I have a long long way to go, still yet, but I *am* learning.

quasimodo flowerYou wanna know something really cool? I googled "Quasimodo" to see if I could find an appropriate picture for this blog, and I found that the flower pictured below was also named Quasimodo....cool huh? I know that the work that God does in me will turn out a beautiful product, like the flower. What a neat thing God ministered to me.

I got the idea for the nickname from my favorite Lifehouse song, called, you guessed it, "Quasimodo." You can read the lyrics here. The reason it ministered to me so much is because I have always been a man-fearer. God is changing that in me, and teaching me that I do not need to live according to man's standards, but ultimately God's standard is the aim I must shoot for.

Love your site, Kim. I have spent most of my life being frugal. Raised 5 children, all homeschooled, on the mission field in Central America. Plus I´m half Scottish. LOL
Blessings and plan to visit often.

You know, I’ve always wondered about your blog title, too! Glad to know it has such a beautiful story behind it.

It means being smart with the money that my husband works so hard to bring home.
Yes! I often fail to articulate that reason whenever I explain our frugal lifestyle. Thanks for the reminder that we can honor our husbands just by saving money.
