Showcase: What Works For Us

Mom blogs about financing, family and freudian slips at What Works For Us. She recently took the plunge and became a SAHM after her son was born. She took a few minutes out of her busy schedule (what? you thought SAHM's ate bon-bons all day?!) to answer a few questions for me.

Why do you blog?

To connect. In my previous life, I was a Software Engineer in Corporate America. After becoming a SAHM (Stay-At-Home-Mom) I left the world of everyday contact with people and technology. Blogging allows me to connect to people via technology.
Why be frugal?

After leaving my career to become a SAHM (Stay-At-Home-Mom), we had to make some sacrifices to live on one income comfortably. Our goal was and is to maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle and home and to always focus on our priorities first. We have a sign in the entrance to our house that says "Live Well, Laugh Often and Love Much" that reminds us of those priorities. We save and spend frugally but live abundantly.

Do you feel your blog has a special niche of its own? Did it happen by design or by accident?

I don't know if there is a special niche for my blog; it's definitely an accident because I woke up one morning and just started writing about my interests. Like many people, I have many interests in life (parenting, finance, technology, pets, gardening, travel..). My blog is a reflection of those interests and sometimes how to do those interests frugally.

Define frugality in your own words. Do you think it means different things to different people?

For us, frugality is not living poorly it's living smart. It's being resourceful. I have a friend who recently said "the day she has to clip coupons is the day she know she has failed". I, personally, love clipping coupons and saving money. It's become a game to see how much I can save via coupons or sales. While some people may think frugality is a synonym for poverty or cheapness, I see it as a resourceful way of living. Because money saved from being frugal can then be invested elsewhere (in a vacation, in a college fund, in a family activity...).

Is it ever possible to be too frugal? How about frugal enough?

Being 'too frugal' is all relative to your personal perspective. What may be too frugal for us isn't too frugal for the next. We're definitely a work in progress but I think we are frugal enough to maintain our lifestyle and priorities.

Do you have any frugal heroes or role models?

Ok, I guess I have to admit it - Clark Howard!

Clark Howard...I'll have to add his site to the Frugal Search Engine!  Thank you, Mom.

I like Clark Howard, too! He doesn’t air on our radio stations, but the library has his basic books on consumer issues.

What Works For Us is a new blog to me. I look forward to reading more of her “resourceful way of living.”
